What is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a distinct therapeutic approach developed by Richard Schwartz in the 1980s. The internal family systems model aims to help individuals understand and heal from painful experiences, such as sexual trauma or other deep-rooted issues.

In IFS, the belief is that your mind consists of multiple “parts” or sub-personalities, each with its own needs and agendas. By understanding these parts and their intricate relationships, you can achieve both emotional balance and personal growth.

The IFS process involves identifying and engaging with your various parts, promoting compassion and trust within your internal system. This approach can be particularly beneficial for those struggling with mental health challenges, as it can uncover underlying causes and address self-destructive patterns.

IFS therapy offers a unique and effective method for healing from mental health disorders, trauma, and other emotional struggles.

Mental Health Treatment and IFS at Sabino Recovery

At Sabino Recovery, you benefit from a comprehensive approach to mental health treatment that includes IFS. Our dual-diagnosis treatment center focuses on addressing the underlying trauma that contributes to both mental health disorders and addiction issues.

During your time at Sabino Recovery, you will participate in individual therapy, with 50 one-on-one sessions in 35 days, enhancing your personalized treatment experience. Group therapy sessions are also integrated, consisting of a maximum of eight participants to ensure an intimate environment. Additionally, our robust family program invites your family to join an on-campus family program, where a dedicated family therapist helps you and your loved ones understand mental health disorders and foster healing.

Our robust continuing care planning begins shortly after admission and includes arrangements for medication management, individual therapy, partial hospitalization programs, or intensive outpatient programs. Additionally, we provide a strong support network through our lifelong alumni program. This program offers individual follow-up, weekly structured group Zoom calls, and alumni reunions, all free of charge.

Benefits of IFS Therapy for Mental Health Disorders

For those with mental health disorders, IFS can offer numerous benefits, such as:

  • Self-awareness and Understanding: IFS helps individuals recognize and understand their various parts, especially those that contribute to mental health challenges.
  • Healing Trauma: Many mental health disorders are associated with past traumas. IFS helps clients access and heal these traumatic memories in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Restoring Autonomy: By understanding and negotiating with the parts that drive mental illness, individuals can regain control over their choices and actions.
  • Improving Relationships: As individuals understand their own parts, they may also develop a better understanding of the behaviors and reactions of others, leading to improved interpersonal relationships.
  • Building Resilience: By developing a strong sense of the "Self" (a core, confident, compassionate self), people can better recover from the impact of mental health challenges.
  • Emotional Regulation: Recognizing and addressing the parts that carry intense emotions, like the inner critic, can help individuals regulate these emotions more effectively, reducing the need to numb them with substances.
  • Long-term Recovery: By addressing the root causes of mental health disorders in the healing process and not just the symptoms, IFS can support long-term recovery and reduce the risk of relapse.
  • Self Leadership: Patients often feel empowered as they understand that they can heal and change from within without solely relying on external factors.
